The Calm Before The Storm
Led by a pair of colorful 1957 Fords including pole sitter #98 Marvin Panch and #22 Fireball Roberts, stock cars roar to life on the distinctive red clay at Asheville-Weaverville Speedway in March of 1957. Anticipating the thunderous steel storm that is about to unfold, a father and son race to safety among the standing room only crowd of nearly 6000 race fans. NASCAR champion #87 Buck Baker driving a 1957 Chevrolet and the 1957 Mercury of #17 Jim Paschal occupy row 2, followed by Paul Goldsmith, Jack Smith, Speedy Thompson and Ralph Moody. Racing legend Ralph Earnhardt, piloting a 1957 Oldsmobile for Petty Enterprises, starts in the 9th position in the #188. After 200 laps on the half-mile dirt oval Buck Baker took the checkered flag on his way to his second consecutive NASCAR championship later that season.
